Today’s tutorial shows you just how you can take a past Try It Class card – grab the pdf – and transform it in to something new!
This Holy Family card started out as a Turtle Card!! What? See it happen here:
Before we talk about all the lovely elements of the card….let’s address the fact that our nativity has no faces. There are a few reasons that I can think of – which do you think it is?
First – I am sure most of you are familiar with the popular line of Willow Tree – they also have no faces.
The stamps could also be colored in shades of brown for a carved wood look. That was where I was going to go with this card to start…but the paper called for color! Check back later this week as I show you a ‘wood card’
Finally when you search online for why some figures do not have faces (because it IS a thing!) here is what we learn:
Faceless nativity sets are designed to represent the Holy Family and other figures without specific facial features, allowing viewers to project their own emotions and interpretations onto the figures. This approach can also be seen as a way to focus on the spiritual significance of the nativity scene rather than individual identities.
I would rather have a realistic faceless nativity than the ones made out of bears…..or all the other ‘animal’ ones I have seen. You can always try to draw faces on them if you like!
The paper I used here is the Elegant Pine Snowflakes. So very pretty and not the typical snowflake paper we normally think of. Such rich deep colors!
To play off those colors I chose Beige as the neutral (and because it was going to be a wood look originally). Sometimes white (and even vanilla) can be too stark a difference. Beige is perfect here.
It also allows you to use that White watercolor pencils on the sheep and have them really pop off the page.
The fun fold was one from the last Try It class that I did. To date, there are a couple of those packets remaining at a reduced price. Use the Try It link at the top of the page and get the full tutorial with measurements.
This fold requires something on the bottom to hold the fold closed. The turtle card uses a beach ball…here the manger is just perfect!
Cheri,
If you have any packets left over from your last try-it class featuring the fun fold on this page I will take one. I love cards made with the Holy Family. Please email the price to me.
Thanks, Liz
I will send the invoice to you and once it’s paid the packet and the video links will be sent to you : )
